What kinds of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are available? There are some Equine -MRI-Companies within Germany and also worldwide, and you can get either an upright standing MRI (0.27 Tesla) or a recumbent, lying-down MRI (1.5 Tesla). Both of them have advantages and disadvantages; the choice depends on the examination goal/s and the horse owner.

When to consider a standing MRI? Most MRI units only allow imaging of the hock , or knee down. Given that with a recumbant MRI, the horse has to get a general anaesthetic and this can be – in some cases (1 : 100) be lethal for the

500 kg patient – it is seldom used. For this reason, the worried horse owner often doesn’t choose a recumbant MRI, when just the feet or pasterns have to be examined. Therefore, the method of choice is the standing MRI (the first examinations took place in the year 2004 with Hallmarq). The investigator obtains very good images das Bild from the distal extremities e.g. feet , pasterns, and fetlocks and from other body parts as well. The most frequently examined structure for imaging is the hoof. It has a lot of soft tissue around it and cannot be observed and diagnosed using x-ray or ultrasound.

Where to go, and how does one prepare a horse? If your veterinarian refers your horse for MRI scanning, he or she will direct you to the right facility. Equine MRI is widely available, however, in some cases horse owners may have to drive long distances to reach a facility with an equine standing MRI.

The horse should be in a good general health condition, but before scanning the local veterinarian will – in every case – examine the horse.

Don’t forget to remove the horse shoes and all nails from the leg to be scanned and the adjacent leg. Happily, steel-fittings on the rope and holster , as well as the iron -shoes on the hind quarters , do not interfere with the examination at all.

The horse is then walked into the MRI scanner, receives a mild sedative and the lame leg is placed between the poles of the magnet. A radiofrequency coil (there are three sizes available: hoof, fetlock and carpus) is fitted around the injured site and the VMTA makes careful adjustments to ensure that horse and magnet are in the correct place. After scanning, allow your horse some recovery time. In most cases you can return home the same day. The result will be sent to your local veterinarian for review.

How long does the procedure take? The duration of the examination depends on the strength of the MRI magnet. In most cases the scan takes (with a standing equine MRI) between 1 and 2 hours. In this time, around 300–500 images are produced of the limb das Glied or hoof from different angles.

What about the quality and the costs of the examination? The quality of the image depends on the strength of the MRI magnet. The best quality you can achieve is with the strongest magnet density (currently 1.5 Tesla). The weaker the magnets are, the lower the spatial resolution.

Costs vary depending on your region, starting at around EUR 1,000. There are many insurance companies which will cover the costs: you should nevertheless check with your insurance prior to the MRI scan.
