HIV stands for “Human Immuno Deficiency Virus”. During this infection the body is no longer able to protect itself against invading bacteria, funghi or viruses.

In its severe form, life threatening diseases occur, such as strong pneumonia occur. These symptoms are called AIDS, which stands for “Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome“. Today, very potent drugs against HIV exist. They prevent the proliferation of the virus within the blood stream. Although these treatments cannot completely remove the virus from the patient’s body, HIV-infected people may survive the disease for a long time.

In 2015, 84,700 people in Germany were infected with HIV (3,200 of which became infected in 2015, the others were already infected). This amount has neither increased nor decreased in recent years.
