In health care facilities, risks exist. The employees are the most at risk. Firstly, the risk of infectious pathogens is very high; workers can be exposed to Hepatitis-B- or Hepatitis-C-Viruses, or to HIV. Thus, arrangements to minimize the risk of infection are exceptionally important. Secondly, accidents with chemicals or reagents (disinfectants) are possible in health care facilities because the cleaning-agents arrive in concentrated form and need to be diluted prior to use.

Infections can be very dangerous for both, health care professionals and patients. Hand disinfection is the principle method of substantially reducing this risk.

What exactly does disinfection mean?

Disinfection is a process (hygienic measuredie Hygienemaßnahme) to inactivate most (or nearly all) microorganisms (pathogenicpathogen or not). Because of this inactivation, the quantity of microorganisms in or on a biological object, on clothing, or hard surfaces, are being reduced. The aim is a condition where infection is no longer possible.

Nosocomial infections have risen in recent years; e. g. primary sepsis, urinary tract infection, pneumonia, MRSA-infections – etc. This is mainly due to inadequate hygiene. But what is the reason for this?…
