How is the heart structured? A short review of its anatomy: The human heart is a fist-sized muscle with cavities that rhythmically contracts to pump blood throughout the body and the lungs, supplying oxygen to all organs. Each minute the heart transports about 5 – 6 liters of blood, which is also about the amount of blood in an adult.

The heart is located in the pericardium, center of the chest cavity. On the surface of the heart muscle (myocardium) are the coronary arteries, which supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients. These vessels leave the aorta at its beginning and then divide at the surface of the heart into branches around the heart.

The heart consists of right and left sides. These are separated by the cardiac septum. On each side, there is an atrium and a chamber (ventricle). At the junction between them the heart valves ensure that blood flows in only one direction.
