What is ultrasound? Ultrasound is a sound wave with a frequency in the megahertz range (between 1 MHz and 1 GHz) which is completely inaudible to humans. The speed sound waves pass through a medium depends on the density of that medium (high frequency ultrasound – superficial structures, low frequency ultrasound – deeper structures).

How does ultrasound work?

The ultrasound technique (also called ultrasonography) is a non-invasive medical tool, which displays the images of the body in thin, flat sections and helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

Ultrasonography requires a transducer that transmits and detects the ultrasound waves. The ultrasound gel, which will be placed directly on the patient’s skin, is important because the high-frequency sound waves are transmitted from the probe through the gel into the body. The sounds that bounce back from the tissue, the organs or the unborn baby are received by the transducer, transmitted as electrical signals to a computer that uses these signals to create an image of the observed organ or baby.

Most modern sonographic devices use piezo-electric crystal…
