As the name suggests, the Merkel cell polyomavirus, first discovered in 2008, belongs to the polyomavirus family. It is the 5th polyomavirus to be identified in humans and is closely associated with the development of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), a rare but aggressive form of skin cancer.

Abstract

Merkel cell polyomaviruses, abbreviated as MCPyV or MCV, belong to the polyomavirus family. In humans, they are apparently involved in the development of an aggressive, malignant skin tumour, Merkel cell carcinoma. The virus is one of seven known human oncoviruses. It is believed to be transmitted via the respiratory tract. Since virus mutations form, the Merkel cell polyomavirus is apparently not transmissible from person to person.

Keywords: polyomaviruses, Merkel cell carcinoma, malignant skin tumours, oncoviruses
