Aortic sclerosis and atherosclerosis are also secondary findings in cross-sectional imaging examinations of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines, and are particularly striking on computer tomography scans.
Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease with plaque development simultaneously in different arteries. In the development and progression of atherosclerosis individual predisposition, nutrition, environmental factors and epigenetics play an important role. Vascular imaging to detect cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial disease non-invasively is increasingly employing ultrasound as well as CT- and MRI-based techniques.
